The Film Finance Fellowship was founded on a simple belief: that talented creators deserve access to the knowledge and networks that make independent filmmaking possible.
"Our mission is to demystify film finance and empower the next generation of producers, directors, and creators with the business acumen to bring their visions to life."
The Film Finance Fellowship emerged from a recognition that while film schools teach the art of filmmaking, few programs adequately prepare creators for the complex business of financing independent films. Too many talented filmmakers struggle not from lack of vision, but from lack of access to the financial knowledge and industry relationships that make production possible.
We created this fellowship to bridge that gap—to provide emerging producers and directors with practical, real-world training in film finance, from equity structures and tax incentives to distribution strategies and gap financing. Our curriculum is built around actual case studies of successful independent films, taught by the producers and financiers who made them happen.
The film industry has traditionally been opaque and insular. We believe in transparency and opening doors for talented creators regardless of their background or connections.
Understanding film finance doesn't compromise artistic vision—it enables it. The more creators understand the business, the more control they have over their work.
Independent filmmaking thrives on collaboration. We foster a community where fellows support each other, share knowledge, and build lasting professional relationships.
We envision a future where independent filmmakers no longer have to choose between artistic integrity and financial viability. A future where a talented director from any background can walk into a meeting with investors and speak their language with confidence. Where producers understand not just how to make films, but how to structure deals that protect their creative vision while delivering returns to their partners.
Imagine a generation of filmmakers who can read a term sheet, negotiate distribution agreements, and structure co-productions across borders. Who understand the interplay between tax incentives, pre-sales, and gap financing. Who can build sustainable careers in independent film because they've mastered both the art and the business. That's the future we're building, one fellowship cohort at a time.
Applications for the 2026 Film Finance Fellowship open in September 2025.
